Where to buy firewood in Northern Virginia: every option, compared
Every way to buy firewood around Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Arlington, and Alexandria, compared on the three things that matter: how dry it is, how much wood you actually get, and what it costs to have a fire. From a firewood company one county west.

I grew up in Upperville, started selling firewood here at eleven, and have watched the Northern Virginia firewood market from both sides for over a decade. There are good options and bad ones, and the price tag does not tell you which is which. Here is the map.
Short answer
For outdoor fires with a truck and a shed, a landscape yard is a fair deal. For a fireplace or stove you want to use all winter without fighting wet wood, buy kiln-dried by the stack with the dimensions printed and have it delivered and stacked. Whatever you buy, buy it in September.
Landscape and mulch yards
Springfield, Chantilly, Manassas, Sterling, Leesburg: most mulch yards sell seasoned firewood by the cord, half cord, or "tote" for pickup, and some deliver for a fee. The per-cord price is fair and the wood is usually real hardwood. What you supply is a truck or trailer, the loading and unloading, the stacking, and the trust that "seasoned" means dry this year. Fine for a fire pit. Worth testing with a moisture meter before it goes in the house.
Tree services
Tree companies produce a lot of wood and some sell it. The price can be good. The wood is often whatever came down that month, in mixed lengths, and green, since it was a tree two weeks ago. Ask when it was split and stacked. If the answer is "recently," it is next year's firewood.
Roadside signs, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace
The cheapest sticker in the region, $150 to $350 for "a cord" or "a truck load." A full-size pickup holds a third of a cord stacked, less loose, so the cord is usually a face cord, and the dryness is whatever the seller says. Some of these sellers are honest woodlot owners with excellent wood. You cannot tell from the ad, and you usually cannot tell from the pile. The truck load guide shows how to measure what you are getting.
Grocery, hardware, and gas station bundles
Convenient and, per log, the most expensive firewood on this list: $6 to $12 for five or six pieces, often damp in the wrap. One bundle is one fire. A winter of bundles costs more than a stack delivered. The bundle math guide does the arithmetic.
Firewood delivery companies
A handful of companies in the region deliver firewood to the door, some seasoned, a few kiln-dried. This is where we sit. Our wood is kiln-dried hardwood (tested, consistent, insect-free, safe in the garage), sold by the stack with the dimensions printed: 2x4, 4x4, 4x8, and 4x16 feet of 16 inch splits. A 4x8, a third of a cord and about 80 fires, is $360 for Mixed Hardwoods or $420 for 100% Oak. Delivery across Northern Virginia is $25 inside the Beltway, $35 across most of Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William, and $45 in western Loudoun, Fauquier, and toward Fredericksburg, usually within 1 to 5 days, stacked where you want it for a small add-on, with a photo when it is done.
