Firewood delivery in Greensboro and the Triad: fees, towns, and what to expect

How firewood delivery works across Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem and Burlington now that our routes reach the Triad: the fees, the towns, what a stack is, and what to expect on delivery day.

Kiln-dried firewood on the truck for a Triad delivery run

The Triad is the closest North Carolina market to the yard our southern routes load at, about an hour down Highway 29 from South Boston, which is why Greensboro opened in the same week as Raleigh. Here is how a delivery works there.

Short answer

We deliver kiln-dried hardwood by the stack across the Triad for $40 to $60 by zip: $50 in Greensboro and High Point, $60 in Winston-Salem, Burlington, Kernersville and the outer towns, $40 in Reidsville and Eden. A 4x8 ft stack, one third of a cord, is $360 for Mixed Hardwoods and $420 for 100% Oak. Order online, pick a date, and the driver stacks it where you say.

The towns and the fees

  • $40: Reidsville, Eden, Wentworth, Mayodan, Madison, the Rockingham County towns on the road down from the yard.
  • $50: Greensboro, High Point, Jamestown, Pleasant Garden, Gibsonville.
  • $60: Winston-Salem, Kernersville, Clemmons, Lewisville, Burlington, Mebane, Graham, Elon, Oak Ridge, Summerfield, Stokesdale, Archdale, Thomasville, Lexington, Asheboro, Mount Airy.

The fee is set by zip and shows at checkout before you pay. Each town page lists its own zips: start at firewood delivery in Greensboro.

What a stack is, in North Carolina terms

North Carolina sells firewood by the cord or a fraction of it. A full cord is 128 cubic feet, a 4 by 4 by 8 foot pile. Our sizes are fractions of that: a 2x4 ft stack of 16 inch splits is one twelfth of a cord (about 20 fires), a 4x4 is one sixth, a 4x8 is one third (about 80 fires), and a 4x16 is two thirds. The local "face cord" is the same volume as our 4x8. Every delivery comes with a ticket that states the quantity delivered.

What is different about kiln-dried

Most Triad firewood is seasoned by the truckload: cut from tree removals, split, and left to dry outdoors for a season. Done well it burns fine. Done the usual way it is dry on the outside and wet in the core, and you find out on the first cold night. Kiln-dried wood has been through a heated kiln for days, which brings every piece to a low moisture content, kills insects and mold, and makes it safe to keep in the garage. It lights off one starter and burns hot with little smoke.

Delivery day

  1. You order online with your address, the stack size and wood, stacking or dump, and a preferred date.
  2. We confirm the date by email and text, usually within 1 to 5 days of the order.
  3. The driver loads at the yard in South Boston that morning and runs the Triad route.
  4. At your house the driver stacks the wood where your directions say, or dumps it by the garage, and texts you a photo. You do not need to be home.

Racks

Our steel rack and the rack combo are not offered on the North Carolina routes this season. Any 8 ft rack from a hardware store holds a 4x8 stack; put it on a hard surface, under cover, and the wood stays as dry as it arrived.

When to order

Early. The Triad's seasoned sellers sell out in December most years, and a stack ordered in October is waiting on the rack for the first cold night. Reorder from your email receipt when it runs low; most Triad customers will take two 4x8 stacks across a winter, or one 4x16 for a stove.
